The Deep & Early Earth Processes (DEEP) Research Group was founded in 2017 at the University of Johannesburg. DEEP is operating under the direction of Principal Investigator (PI) Prof. Sebastian Tappe, who oversees the research projects of several undergraduates, post-graduates and post-doctoral fellows.

The Kimberley kimberlites are of Group 1 affinity with ages that cluster around 90 Ma. The 'Kimberley octahedral diamond' found here weighed a whopping 616 ct!

The DEEP research team visits Finsch diamond mine - Northern Cape, South Africa

The Finsch kimberlite is ca. 126 Ma old. The Petra owned mine is the second largest diamond operation by production in South Africa, and produces a number of +50 ct diamonds annually.
